Gheller Video Scores on Rogers

When the Georgian Grizzlies visited Loyalist College to battle for the OCAA Division II men’s rugby championship, Sports Journalism student Braun Gheller stepped in to provide video for Rogers TV, Simcoe County. The Loyalist Lancers won the match, taking their second-straight Division title.

Handling the Heat: Tyson Teichmann

From time to time, we plan to highlight stories written by students in our Sports Journalism program.
Here’s one of them … a profile written by Kristen Shilton.

Handling the Heat: Tyson Teichmann

BELLEVILLE – Ken Dryden, the incomparable former Montreal Canadiens’ goaltender, once said that for players between the pipes, the biggest enemy they face each game is themselves. Tyson Teichmann, the 17-year-old goalie for the Ontario Hockey League’s Belleville Bulls, agrees that on-the-job pressure is sometimes enough to make him mental.

“Oh yeah, it can be frustrating in net,” he says. “When you work to be the best, you can get hard on yourself. I’m almost too hard on myself I’ve been told. I’m losing hair already.”

Entering his second season with the Bulls, Teichmann has earned the starter’s job, in part because of a strong performance for Team Canada’s Under-18 squad at a tournament in Europe this past summer. Teichmann started six games, finishing 4 - 2. His shutout in the gold medal game lifted Canada past the U.S.A. 1 - 0. In recently released rankings of draft eligible players, the NHL Central Scouting Bureau has the netminder ranked seventh among OHL goalies.

Wham Bam Thank You Jim Lang

Jim Lang of Sportsnet with Loyalist Sports J's

Mind your manners around microphones and thoroughly research every story.

Those were two of the key messages Sportsnet anchor Jim Lang had for students when he visited Loyalist College in March.

Lang, 44, is a Sportsnet anchor and senior NHL reporter in Toronto. Prior to joining Sportsnet, he was the sports director at Q107 radio.

Lang showed students some of the TV stories he did while covering Super Bowl XLIV in Miami. His associate producer for the week was Loyalist BJ grad Scott Moore. Lang explained the process that goes into hunting down the best archive footage; how stories are fed back to Toronto from out-of-town locations; and how to hustle after a game to get good quotes.

The veteran sportscaster also reminded students to be very careful around open mics. An off-the-cuff remark can land a journalist in a heap of hot water if uttered near a live microphone. He also reinforced the importance of background research and becoming as familiar as possible with every story -- before venturing out to any event.

Loyalist Sports J Grads Call Dukes Comeback

Loyalist College Sports Journalism grads Joel Lavictoire and David Foot call the final game of the amazing comeback staged by the Wellington Dukes of the CCHL.  The Dukes were down 3-0 in the series and came back to win it in game seven.
This is a good example of what Loyalist Sports J grads are doing:

From Making Plays to Play-by-Play

Name: Andrew James Murray
Born: Belleville, Ontario
Age: 25
Program: Sports Journalism
Previous Academic Credentials:
Bachelor of Science Degree (sports management), Bluefield College, Virginia.
Associate Arts Degree (physical education), Hagerstown Community College, Hagerstown, Maryland

(Summer 2009 - Matt Cooke and Andrew Murray with the Stanley Cup)

By age 10, Andrew Murray already had dabbled in hockey, baseball and golf. He eventually focused on baseball and by the time he was in 12th grade, had earned a spot on the Kingston Ponies baseball team.
After finishing high school, Andrew’s sporting prowess helped him net an athletic scholarship to play ball in the U.S. at colleges in Virginia and Maryland.
Along the way, Andrew caught the eye of some major league baseball scouts. Although he never cracked the big leagues, Andrew did find an audience doing play-by-play for ESPN radio in Bluefield, Va. That sparked an interest in sports journalism and his decision to enroll in Loyalist’s Sports Journalism program in September 2009.
We’ll let Andrew fill in the details in his own words:

SPJN student Adrienne South added to the Mix

Sports Journalism student Adrienne South is the new voice of sports on Mix97 radio’s morning show in Belleville.

South started her gig on Feb. 5. Once a week, she’s doing a live Q&A with morning show hosts Sean Kelly and Orlena Cain.

“I’ve been harassing them since September for the opportunity to do this,” said South, a graduate of Conestoga College’s journalism program who spent eight months as a part-time news anchor at 570News in Kitchener, Ont.

“The topic of our 90-second segment is college sports at Loyalist, so it’s keeping me on my toes,” said South, who’s also the game-night host for Belleville Bulls’ home games at the Yardmen Arena.

South says her dream job in sports journalism “is definitely not play-by-play. I’d rather steal Jennifer Hedger’s job (as co-host on SportsCentre) at TSN.”

SPJN students free-lancing for The Canadian Press

Sports Journalism students Chris Farrell, Shawn Pittman and Adrienne South got some great hands-on experience freelancing for the Canada Press. They combined to provide coverage of the Ontario Hockey League’s 2010 All-Star Game and Skills Contest in Kingston.

I was groggy and I then I heard ‘This is Rejean Oooilllll’

Name: Shawn Jerome Pittman

Born: Gander, Newfoundland Labrador
Age: 25 (on Valentine’s Day)
Program: Sports Journalism

Shawn Pittman is a 2009 graduate of Loyalist’s Broadcast Journalism program. He interned at KIX.106 FM radio in Peace River, Alberta, in the spring of 2009, and is now enrolled in Loyalist’s one-year, post-grad Sports Journalism program.

Born and raised in Newfoundland Labrador, Shawn decided to do one of his reporting assignments on the Montreal Canadiens and admits he was a bit nervous interviewing a couple of former Habs’ greats.

We’ll let Shawn tell the story in his own words:

“For my profile assignment, I set up some pretty solid interviews. First, I e-mailed Rejean Houle. He’s a former Montreal Canadiens who’s now the team ambassador and head of its Alumni Association. He called me back during fall study week. So I was sleeping in and his phone call woke me up. I was groggy and then I heard ‘This is Rejean Oooilllll’. I set up an interview with him for later on and he helped me set up a phone interview with Jean Béliveau for about a week later.
