Successful season ends at Seneca for Lady Lancers

Lancer guard/forward Diane Bauder
drives to the net around a defending
Seneca player in the second half.

by Shawn McLeish

The Loyalist Lancers women’s basketball team began the season with a singular goal:  To make it to the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) championships.  In order to achieve that goal, they had to beat the Niagara Knights in a playoff game at the Lancer Dome.

Through three quarters, the Lancers prospects looked bleak.  They were down 40-34 and had yet to even have a lead in the game.  Enter Dianne Bouder.  Bouder, a fifth-year forward, was playing her final game at Loyalist.  The Lancers teams she had played on the past two seasons won a combined five games.  She had never been to the OCAA’s before and wasn’t about to let her final chance slip away.

The Lancers began to chip away at the Niagara lead until they were within two.  Bouder, a Cannifton native, coolly received a pass from point guard Martine Gauvin and drained her second consecutive three-pointer to give the Lancers their first lead of the game.  Less than five minutes remained and Loyalist never relinquished that lead.  Bouder and second-year guard Haley Sisler led the team with 12 points each.  Center Samantha Goff added an astounding 16 rebounds in the win.

Puempel's Purpose

BELLEVILLE – Matt Puempel is not your typical teenager. At just 18, his trophy case is already full and he’s a philanthropist. The native of Essex, Ont., near Windsor, is now in his third year with the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League.
“He is a special individual,” says Petes’ Head Coach Mike Pelino. “He has a heart of gold and wants to do anything he can for his fellow human beings. He does volunteer work at the school and work with the less fortunate. Anytime we have a community event, Matt’s open to all of it.”
The 24th pick of the Ottawa Senators in the 2011 NHL entry draft, Puempel recently started his own charity, “Puempel’s Purpose”. Every time Puempel scores a goal or gets an assist, money is donated to the Children’s Wish Foundation.
Pete Dalliday, who has broadcast Petes’ games for 15 years and has known Puempel since he came to Peterborough at 16, says the charity has gotten the city’s attention
“It's only been a (a few months) now, and it's starting to snowball. More companies are hopping on board. They really like Matt. (He’s) mature beyond his years. He's a really personable young man and he's a fan favourite here,” said Dalliday.

Barry Larkin - Hall of Famer?

Loyalist College Sports Journalism student Shawn McLeish says Larkin is not due any post-career recognition in baseball.  Maybe a Barry Larkin Appreciation Day in Cincinnati, but that’s it.
McLeish writes about Larkin's election to the Baseball Hall of Fame on Smackblog.
Smackblog is an opinion-based blog.  The subjects occasionally vary, but it is mostly sports-centric. New posts come weekly...or more often if the mood strikes.
McLeish started the opinion-based blog in February of 2011.  He relaunched it this week.
