Matt Westcott’s extraordinary adventure

A 30-minute documentary film on snowboarding directed and co-produced by Loyalist Sports Journalism student Matt Westcott has gone global.

The film is called Extra.Ordinary. In November, it earned runner-up honours in the Radical Reel category at the Banff Film Festival in Alberta. And the film was subsequently chosen for the Banff Festival’s World Tour.

Extra.Ordinary also was a finalist at the Kendal Mountain Festival Film Competition in Derbyshire, England, later in November. Although it didn’t cop an award there, the film was a late addition to the 7th Annual Stowe Mountain Film Festival in Stowe, Vermont, Nov. 28 to Dec. 5.

Matt grew up in Westport, Ont. Prior to coming to Loyalist in September, he lived in Fernie, B.C. He runs his own production company, Dubsbrothers Films.

Matt was one of two videographers and editors on the film. His co-producer was Joel Whalen.

“The movie was filmed over six months and paid for out of pocket, says Matt. “We didn’t really have a budget. The people in it are ski bums.”

Digital technology enabled Matt and Joel to collaborate on the editing despite being in different time zones, three hours apart. Matt was in Stirling, Ont., where he’s now living, and Joel was in Fernie.

“It took six weeks, 12 hours a day, to edit,” Matt says. “Joel was out there in Fernie and we were sending the file back and forth. We had identical hard drives and used Final Cut Pro editing.”

Matt spent a week in Banff in early November after earning a scholarship to attend the Banff Festival’s Adventure Filmmakers’ Workshop.
