Fall Field Trip to Toronto

The SPJNs had a chance to hobnob and to check out the hot seats at several Toronto media outlets during their recent field trip.

First stop: The Score. While there, the SPJNs caught up Scott Winters. He’s the HD studio supervisor at The Score. Scott’s a 1999 graduate of Loyalist’s TV program. Greg Sansone, vice-president of production and programming at The Score, also made time for a chat.

Matt Westcott’s extraordinary adventure

A 30-minute documentary film on snowboarding directed and co-produced by Loyalist Sports Journalism student Matt Westcott has gone global.

The film is called Extra.Ordinary. In November, it earned runner-up honours in the Radical Reel category at the Banff Film Festival in Alberta. And the film was subsequently chosen for the Banff Festival’s World Tour.

A graduate of the inaugural SPJN class in June 2009, Greg starts at Sportsnet December 7. As a Broadcast Associate, he’ll be cutting highlights packages and writing scripts for the sports anchors.

During Greg’s first foray into post-secondary education, he studied criminology.

Preparing Sports Journalists for the Future

The emphasis of our program is on sports broadcasting (television and radio), although students receive instruction in writing for the print and online media. Students develop skills in interviewing, hosting, editing, shooting and researching and get plenty of practical experience.
