Graduate Profiles - Kristen Shilton

Loyalist College Sports Journalism Class of 2011 graduate Kristen Shilton is profiled in the latest college Alumni e-newsletter.  Marketing Officer Marilyn Warren wrote the profile of Shilton who is now an assistant in the communications department of the Chicago Wolves, the farm team for the Vancouver Canucks.

Enter the Talktagon

The Talktagon is sports talk with Loyalist College Sports Journalism students.  Today the first edition of the new season hit the air on 91X...CJLX FM in Belleville, Ontario.
Our team of sports journalists doesn't blah, blah, blah about the lockout.  Instead you'll hear fact based opinion on the Belleville Bulls upcoming season, week two in the NFL and the stretch run to the MLB playoffs.
The Talktagon is on the air every Friday at 2:30p.m. on 91X and hits the blog and Soundcloud.  We hope you enjoy.

Class of 2013 - Orientation

   The faculty of the Loyalist College post-grad Sports Journalism program is looking forward to welcoming the class of 2013 for Orientation Day.  Orientation takes place starting in the gym at 9:00a.m. on Tuesday, September 4, 2012.  Students will gather under the Sports Journalism sign and join their faculty for the beginning of their learning experience at Loyalist.  Some students will also be continuing their learning at Loyalist after graduating from other programs.

   Activities have been planned throughout the week to introduce students to the unique program and the college environment.  Students will also begin their classes on Wednesday and wrap up their week on Friday by getting media I-D photos and playing a game of cricket.

   Professor Rob Snoek is covering the Paralympics in London for the CBC.  However, he will be back for his first class on September 10th.  You can follow his coverage on Twitter @RobSnoekLIVE.

Sports Journalism Grads Land Full-time Jobs


            We’re happy to report that Tara Allaire and Logan Clow, members of the Sports Journalism class of 2012, have landed full-time reporting jobs.

            Tara began working in May as a reporter at Thunder Bay Television, near her hometown of Red Rock, Ont. She had completed her one-month SPJN internship at Thunder Bay TV in April.

            Tara is a former competitive runner who attended Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina, before completing her Bachelor of Arts degree at Lakehead University.

            Logan Clow, of Brockville, Ont., is heading soon to Fairview, Alberta, to begin his job June 18 as a multi-media journalist with Sun Media. His primary duties will be to report for the local weekly newspaper, the Fairview Post.

Logan did his SPJN internship at CKWS TV in Kingston and is a 2011 graduate of Loyalist’s Radio Broadcasting program.

Logan Clow Chosen as Sports Journalism Faculty Award Winner

Logan Clow, of Brockville, Ont., received the G.P. Hunt Faculty Award as the outstanding Sports Journalism student in the class of 2012 at Loyalist College’s convocation ceremony on June 8.

            Logan was a 2011 graduate of Loyalist’s Radio Broadcasting program and was named to the Dean’s List in both 2011 and 2012.

            The G.P. Hunt Award is given annually to the graduating student selected by the Sports Journalism faculty who best exemplifies professionalism, leadership and academic achievement.

Congratulations to all members of the Sports Journalism class of 2012 who received their post-grad SPJN certificates at the 45th convocation ceremony at Loyalist College on Friday, June 8.

            Members of the class of 2012 are: David Alexander, Tara Allaire, Anthony Bumbaco, Logan Clow, Ryan Dickison, John Langdon, Shawn McLeish, Jaden Snoddon and Matt Taylor.

            Mike Wobschall also received his SPJN certificate on Friday. Mike is the first Loyalist student to undertake the combined Journalism: Online, Print and Broadcast (JOPB) and post-grad Sports Journalism program. The dual-credit program of study enabled Mike to earn his SPJN certificate while completing his third year in the JOPB advanced diploma program.  

            The class of 2012 is the fourth cohort to graduate from the SPJN program which began in 2008-09.
